I still remember the Michael Fay incident which was a bit similar also where diplomatic immunity was claimed at first but denied as he learned the hard way that his father's immunity status did not extend to spouses and dependents like himself, in fact not all embassy staff get immunity for family/dependents only the high ranking ones, some positions (i.e Consul) only get immunity only for fulfilling their offical job duties not any personal activities in the host country thus no immunity for family members.
